In this section of our website we present the territory of the province of Arezzo, in Tuscany
Sansepolcro
We are in Tuscany, at a crossroads with three other regions: Marche, Emilia Romagna and Umbria, in the marvelous Alta Valle di Tevere, a territory privileged for its artistic beauties and for the wealth of nature. Sansepolcro is a city of medieval origins; its historic center is a treasure chest of art.
To measure its artistic wealth, it is sufficient to recall the Resurrection by Piero della Francesca and the Madonna della Misericordia, also by Piero della Francesca (Civic Museum), first of all, but also the very old wooden statuary of the Volto Santo (cathedral). The city also gave birth to other celebrities, among them the mathematician Luca Pacioli, who was illustrious in various fields of human activity.
In Sansepolcro, in the attractive setting of piazza Torre di Berta, nestled among Renaissance palazzos, alternate Sundays in September bring a reenactment of the historic competition of Palio della Balestra (Cross-bow shooting) between the archers of Sansepolcro and Gubbio: a tradition that has been revived from the 15th century.
Arezzo
A medieval city surrounded by hills of grape vines and olive trees, it rises in the center of four valleys rich in history and culture, as well as the highest quality agricultural food products. Visitors are reminded of the famous Antiquarian fair held in the streets of the historic center every month.
There are two museums, the archeological museum housed in an Olivet convent built in a Roman amphitheatre, and the rich medieval museum collection, along with many artistic monuments, where the works of Piero della Francesca, Giorgio Vasari and Andrea della Robbia stand out, just to mention a few. Don’t forget that this is where Roberto Benigni filmed some scenes of his master work "La vita bella (Life is Beautiful)
".
Cortona
Cortona rises from the side of a rugged hill within the confines of the Val di Chiana, dominating the Trasimeno Lake.
Among the monuments of greatest impact in Cortona are the Duomo and churches, the Chiesa di Santa Maria Nuova, the Chiesa di San Francesco, the Chiesa di San Nicol, the Santuario di Santa Margherita. There are also the Museum of the Accademia Etrusca, the Museo Diocesano, the Fortezza di Girifalco, the Palazzo Comunale and the Palazzo Fierli-Petrella.
The city of Cortona gave birth to the Renaissance painter Luca Signorelli (1445-1523). Among the many exhibitions held periodically in Cortona is the Mostra Mercato Nazionale del Mobile Antico (Exhibition and Market of Antique Furniture) that is held every year in the month in September.
Florence
Elegant and full of light, Florence extends along the banks of the Arno, crowned by gentle, rounded hills. Unique in the world for the monumental grandiosity of its construction and the refined elegance of urban structure, Florence maintains intact the harmonious grace given it by the masters of the Renaissance.
Full of monuments, historic and artistic buildings, galleries, and museums, Florence expresses all the splendor of its ancient civilization. Great renown is also due to the hand-crafting activities (work in straw and basket-making), the gastronomy, with all the tasty dishes of Tuscan cuisine, and the cultural and folk events (from the Scoppio del Carro – Explosion of the Cart – to Maggio Musicale - Musical May, from the Fiera degli Uccelli – Bird Fair– to the Festival Cinematografico dei Popoli – People's film festival). Florence must be visited by all those, Italian and foreign, who go to Tuscany to appreciate everything beautiful created in the past for the today’s life. Florence is one of those cities that must be seen again and again.
